truth

So, what is truth?  Truth is more than a what.  It is not just a philosophy, idea, or mindset.  It is more than a statement or something you read in a book.  Truth is not only a what, it is also a Who.  Truth is a person.   His Name is Jesus.

Jesus made a very exclusive and powerful claim when He said what He did in John 14:6; “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  Our world needs to know the Truth.  People are being bombarded with all kinds of true(ish) philosophies from so many directions each and every day.  Perhaps you have subtly been drawn into accepting some of them.  That’s the beauty of having a compass.  The Word of God can help us detect the drift and get back on track.

Here is what Jesus prayed in John 17:17; “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”   We all need to have an anchor in our life.  We need something that is solid and dependable when the shifting winds of culture blow.  The Word of God provides that kind of stability and that kind of Truth.

It is important that we daily reaffirm our commitment to Truth.  But if you find that you have drifted in your personal life, or if you see some philosophies or unhealthy thinking have subtly crept into your life, be open with God about that.  As soon as you realize you have drifted off course, it is better to admit it and do something about it, than to allow the drift to continue.  Because the further you go, the worse it gets.  If you’re off course by just one degree, after one foot, you’ll miss your target by 0.2 inches.  After 100 yards, you’ll be off by 5.2 feet.  Not huge, but noticeable.  After a mile, you’ll be off by 92.2 feet.  One degree is starting to make a significant difference.

After traveling from San Francisco to L.A., you’ll be off by about 6 miles.  One degree off, when traveling the distance between San Francisco and Washington, D.C., would land you in Baltimore, Maryland, 42.6 miles away.  Following the equator around the globe, you would be off 435 miles, all because of one degree.  Traveling to the moon, you’d miss the mark by 4,169 miles off (nearly twice the diameter of the moon) by being off just 1 degree in your calculations.  One degree can be a dangerous thing.
